Many families in the Mat-Su Valley will have a Christmas filled with presents under the tree this year, thanks to Halloween. That's a sentence you don't see every day.
On Halloween, the Mat-Su Special Santa program, in conjunction with Toys for Tots, is hosting its annual Halloween Hollow at Raven Hall on the Alaska State Fairgrounds. This October tradition directly benefits families in need, as all proceeds go to help deliver Christmas gifts to children who may not otherwise get them during the holiday season.
Halloween Hollow's admission speaks directly to the Special Santa mission - a $5 donation, or one unwrapped toy (no stuffed animals, please), which helps the organization spread the Christmas spirit in two months. The event itself has been wildly successful for 13 years now, and this year's event is shaping up to be just as popular.
From 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Halloween, the event provides a warm, safe place for kids to trick-or-treat and take part in more than 35 different Halloween carnival-themed games. There is something for kids of all ages, and each year, the costumed kids leave with smiles on their faces. There are prizes and lots of candy for the kids, and concessions are available for purchase. The event is handicap-accessible as well.
