Denali State Park

Denali State Park (South)
Not to be confused with Denali National Park and Preserve, the state park is located entirely in the Mat-Su Borough spanning 325,240 acres, almost one-half the size of Rhode Island. Established in 1970, Denali State Park provides visitors with a great variety of recreational opportunities, ranging from roadside camping, rafting and canoeing, flightseeing tours, hiking and excellent views of McKinley.

Situated between the Talkeetna Mountains to the east and the Alaska Range to the west, the Denali Park landscape varies from meandering lowland streams to alpine tundra. Dominating this diverse terrain are Curry and Kesugi Ridges, a 35 mile-long north/south alpine ridge, the backbone of the eastern half of the park. Visit the Alaska State Parks for more information on hiking trails, facilities and a map of the state park.

Mount McKinley (Denali)

Denali State Park is about 100 air miles north of Anchorage and is divided roughly in half by the George Parks Highway , the major road between Anchorage and Fairbanks. Situated between the Talkeetna Mountains to the east and the Alaska Range to the west, the landscape varies from meandering lowland streams to alpine tundra.

Activities in Denali State Park are as abundant as your imagination will allow. The park offers a variety of backcountry adventures from hiking, fishing, gold panning, flightseeing, canoeing to just enjoying the scenery and views of Mt. McKinley.

The plant life of Denali State Park is dominated by white spruce, black spruce, adler and birch forests. Above the timberline, low-growing alpine tundra dominates the landscape including blueberries, high bush and low bush cranberries, currants, and bearberries. Denali State Park has superb vantage points for viewing the breathtaking heart of the Alaska Range - including majestic Mt. McKinley. Hikers should always carry warm clothing and good quality rain gear, as inclement weather can set in quickly and last for days.
