Palmer

Palmer is a picturesque little town with an agricultural flavor. It provides a wide range of hotels, motels, restored inns, bed and breakfasts, and camper parks. Eating establishments range from steak houses, Mexican, Chinese, family style, to health food and gourmet coffee shops. An 18-hole golf course offers views of the mountains and Knik Glacier.

Stop by the Palmer Visitors Center and Museum for information on local attractions and to view gardens filled with beautiful flowers and vegetables. Just up the street is a restored Colony home (circa 1935). Don't miss the historic "church of a thousand logs." Palmer's most celebrated attraction is the Alaska State Fair, which operates the last week of August and the first week of September.

For a photographer's dream drive, travel east on the Glenn Highway 1, stopping to view domesticated musk ox just east of Palmer, followed by a guided hike to the backcountry in Sutton. White water rafting is available at Chickaloon. Enjoy a picnic on Matanuska Glacier, with road access at Mile 102. Lodges and campgrounds along the highway can give directions to hidden mountain lakes, berry picking, fossil finds and wildlife viewing.
