There are four major mountain ranges you can see in the Mat-Su Valley: the Alaska, Chugach, Talkeetna and Wrangell-St. Elias mountain ranges.
Alaska Range: Located in the northwest portion of the borough, this range spans 400 miles long and separates the southcentral region from the interior part of the state. The most well-known peaks in the Alaska Range consists of North America's highest peak, Mount McKinley (20,320') as well as Foraker (17,400') and Hunter (14,573'). Stunning views of Mt. McKinley can be seen from the northern end of the borough.
Chugach Range: Bordering the southeast side of the borough, the Chugach Range forms a crescent that is 300 miles in length. Due to its close proximity to Alaska's southcentral coastal waters, this range received the most snowfall than any other range in the world. Mount Baker is the tallest peak in this range (13,176') however the most prominent peak in the Mat-Su is Pioneer Peak (6,500') located just outside the town of Palmer.
Talkeetna Range: This range of mountains lies on the eastern end of the Mat-Su Borough. The peaks in this range have gentler slopes compared to those in the neighboring Alaska Range and as a result making the Talkeetna Mountains a popular recreational haven. One of these areas is Hatcher Pass which is accessible through Willow, Wasilla and Palmer.
Wrangell Mountains/Saint Elias Range: The Wrangell Mountains mark the northern border of the St. Elias Range and although not located in the Mat-Su Valley, its peaks can be seen on the far eastern end of the borough's border toward Glennallen. The tallest peak in the range is Mt. St. Elias (18,008') located in Canada. Mount Drum (12,010'), Sanford (16,237') and Wrangell (14,163') can be seen from Lake Louise in the Mat-Su Borough.
