Hey neighbors!

If you haven’t checked the forecast yet — tonight’s aurora activity looks incredible! We’re talking KP levels through the roof and clear skies across much of The Mat-Su. So, before the night sky bursts into green and purple glory, I wanted to share my top ten tips for making the most of it.

1. Go outside!!!

Yes, it’s obvious — but you’d be surprised how many folks miss out because they “meant to step out later.” Don’t wait. When those lights dance, they can come and go in minutes. Grab your coat and get out there!

2. Dress warm.

Nothing kills the magic faster than freezing fingers. Layer up — winter coat, hat, gloves, and don’t forget hand and toe warmers. Staying cozy means you can actually enjoy the show instead of sprinting back to your car shivering.

3. Charge those batteries!

Aurora nights can last for hours. Make sure your camera, phone, and hand warmers are fully juiced up. Cold weather drains batteries fast, so bring extras if you have them.

4. Know your camera’s night mode or use a night photo app.

You don’t need a fancy DSLR to capture the beauty. A good night photography app can help your phone take stunning shots. Experiment before you head out so you’re ready when the sky lights up.

5. Read up on aurora science.

The more you know, the more amazing it gets. Understanding why the lights swirl, shimmer, and change color adds a whole new level of awe to what you’re seeing.

6. Step away from the crowd.

At least once during the night, walk a little distance from your car, cabin, or friends. Find a quiet spot. The stillness under the aurora feels otherworldly — just you, the stars, and the sky in motion.

7. Listen.

I’ve never heard the aurora myself, but some people swear they have — a faint crackling or whisper. Whether it’s real or imagination, it’s worth pausing just to enjoy the stillness of the evening as you gaze up.

8. Bookmark an aurora tracker.

I recommend joining the Aurora Borealis Notifications Facebook group or using an aurora app or website for real-time updates. It helps you know when to head out and how long to stay out.

9. Bring a hot drink.

Coffee, cocoa, or tea — whatever warms your hands and heart. There’s something special about sipping something hot while the night sky performs its magic show.

10. Have fun — and say hello!

If you see someone standing out in the dark grinning like a fool with a camera, it might be me. Don’t be shy — say hi! The aurora is better when shared.

So there you have it — my tried-and-true tips for tonight’s aurora extravaganza. Get out there, Mat-Su friends. The sky’s putting on an amazing show just for us!
