The temperature is dropping, but Big Lake Winter Fest will heat up this weekend with a full slate of family-friendly events, leading up to the official start of the Iron Dog, the world's longest snowmachine race.
Big Lake Winter Fest is two days full of fun events that are truly Alaskan. Those from the Lower 48 probably have never heard of "bunny boots," but Alaskans know them very well - oversized, white boots that are darn near indestructible, yet warm no matter what the temperature. At Big Lake Winter Fest, they get the runway experience, as the Bunny Boot Bling takes fashion to another level as contestants "bling out" their boots to create works of wearable art.
While Winter Fest's ending event is the famous Iron Dog, the younger racers have their day in the sun as well. On Saturday, the kids' 120 snowmachine races take place, where future Iron Doggers cut their teeth on the race circuit.
Throughout the two days, vendors will be out on the ice, with a variety of foods and products available. A dog weight pull, family fun snowmachine run, vintage snowmachine races and more all taking place on Saturday, which culminates in the Scott Mueller Memorial Fireworks Display at 7 p.m.
Come on out for the Iron Dog, and stay the weekend. You'll find there's a lot of fun times awaiting in Big Lake. For a complete schedule, visit Big Lake Winterfest.
