Every year ski enthusiasts purchase their season passes to the Skeetawk downhill ski area. It's that much fun! One of Skeetawk's challenges, as with any resort, has been occasional insufficient snow conditions. Even in a region like The Mat-Su, where great snow is a defining feature, sometimes a midwinter warming spell can put a temporary damper on everyone's ski plans. Skeetawk has just made some improvements, however, that could make this coming season their best one yet!
In addition to a new bus-friendly access road, The Mat-Su's favorite downhill ski area has installed snow guns this year. Now, you might be wondering what's so special about that. After all, most downhill resorts have snow making equipment, right? While it's true that this isn't necessarily new or break-through technology, the fact that I'm writing about Skeetawk getting snow guns tells you how beloved this ski area is to local residents.
Skeetawk was brought into operation by shear grass roots willpower. Residents pulled together to raise funds and support to build The Mat-Su's very first downhill ski area. Located in Hatcher Pass, Skeetawk means residents no longer have to travel outside of The Mat-Su for a chair lift ski experience. The best part is that Skeetawk has solid plans for future growth! Progress is made each year, ad every improvement or expansion remains a point of pride for a community that put heart and soul into making this dream a reality.
With snow guns in place to ensure quality ski conditions all season, Skeetawk can expect to host record turnouts this winter. For details about Skeetawk and season dates each year, visit our calendar of events!
