From women hauling buckets of water and bachelors auctioned off to a culinary tour of the town, Talkeetna Winterfest has something for everyone throughout the month of December.

Winterfest kicks off on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m., when the annual motorized parade of lights winds its way through the downtown area. It marks the beginning of a busy couple of weeks in Talkeetna, as the entire town gets into the holiday spirit.

On Saturday, Dec. 3, there's a full day of "Only in Talkeetna" events. The fun begins with the Wilderness Woman competition at noon. This is a hilarious event that is filled with lots of laughs. Some of the competitions include the women racing up and down Main Street with five-gallon buckets of water, a snowmobile course, "shooting" a moose and more. The competition determines the woman with the best Alaska skill set.

That evening, the Talkeetna Bachelor Society literally takes the stage. At 7 p.m. at the Sheldon Community Arts Hangar, the annual bachelor auction takes place. Only women are allowed to attend, and they bid on the bachelors, who then accompany them to the subsequent Bachelor Ball. According to the Talkeetna Bachelor Society's website, each bachelor "promises a drink, a dance and of course, the most honorable intentions." Tickets for the auction sell out quickly. The party doesn't stop after the ball though, as live music begins at the Fairview Inn, and the Talkeetna Roadhouse opens at midnight for breakfast.

Talkeetna catches its breath during the week but gets started back up again on Saturday, Dec. 10 with the Taste of Talkeetna. For $50, attendees get tickets to dine around Talkeetna, with each of seven different restaurants offering single portions. With a full belly after seven courses, attendees then stop by the Fairview Inn and are entered to win one of eight prize packages, including overnight stays, flightseeing trips and much more.

The entire town of Talkeetna celebrates the holidays throughout all of December. Make your plans to visit and make it an overnight - waking up in a cozy cabin on the Talkeetna River, with Denali looming in the distance, is a perfect way to usher in the holiday spirit.
