March is a great month in Alaska - the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer. There's no better place to visit in March than Talkeetna for fun events, great views and outdoor recreation.
Trio Fatbike World Championships
The 2021 Trio Fat Bike race is on! However, due to Covid reasons, this year's event will be a self timed, one lap (approx. 20-25 miles) event. Fat tire bikes are the perfect for snow riding! If you don't have a fat tire bike, consider renting one from North Shore Cyclery for the weekend. After the event, Denali Brewing has an extra special beer brewed for participants, along with great food. There will be several burn barrel/fire pit options. The race begins at 11 a.m. on March 20.
Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins in Willow on March 7, although the start is not open to spectators this year due to Covid restrictions. Make a plan to watch the race from the Susitna River by snowmachining or skiing to a "trailgate" party. Head to Talkeetna for the weekend, and catch the race on the river on your way back to town.
Oosik Classic Ski Race
This year, the Oosik Classic Ski Race is going virtual - you can ski the 25K or 50K courses anywhere in the world to participate, but we have to admit, there's no place like Talkeetna. The Nordic trails are in exceptional shape, and you can ski on your own. Consider a weekend visit to Talkeetna to take advantage of those trails in the heart of "Oosik Classic" country.
Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge
The Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is open in March, welcoming guests to the hotel March 5-22, with rates starting at just $129 a night. With spectacular views of the Alaska Range, March is a perfect time to check out the lodge. The northern lights have been amazing the last few weeks in Southcentral Alaska, and the deck at Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is the perfect place to see them. There are a number of bed and breakfasts, cabins and inns available in Talkeetna as well, but do make reservations ahead of time - many places sell out during March thanks to the many events going on.
This year, make sure to check out the winter fun taking place in Talkeetna!
