March is a great month in Alaska - the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer. There's no better place to visit in March than Talkeetna for some of the quirkiest and fun events you'll find on the calendar.

The fun begins just south of Talkeetna, in Willow on March 3. That's when the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race begins on Willow Lake. The official start is a great family-friendly event where you'll meet the mushers and the canine athletes as they get ready for their 1,100 mile trek to Nome. Following the race start, head north to Talkeetna to continue a fun weekend in the Mat-Su Valley.

The following weekend, on March 9, the 7th Annual Trio Fat Tire Bike Race takes place, with up to 200 fat tire bikers convening for one of two races - a two-lap (40-50 miles) or a one-lap (20-25 miles) race. The events kick off at 9 a.m., and following the two races there is an after party at the Sheldon Hangar featuring awards, dinner and live music by Last Train.

On March 16, the Oosik Classic Ski Race takes over the town, and it's a signature event you don't want to miss. The 25 and 50 kilometer races are more about fun than speed. Participants dress up in costumes, there are drink stations and the overall theme of having a good time is prevalent along the trail. This year, the after party is moving to Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, including two live bands.

Speaking of Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, it will be open throughout March and hosting events like a sushi making class and much more. The lodge has opened for the month of March the last several years. With spectacular views of the Alaska Range, March is a perfect time to check out the lodge. There are a number of bed and breakfasts, cabins and inns available in Talkeetna as well, but do make reservations ahead of time - many places sell out during March thanks to the many events going on.

This year, make sure to check out the winter fun taking place in Talkeetna!
