ATV Tours in the Mat-Su Valley

A popular way to explore the backcountry in the Mat-Su Valley is on an ATV - an all-terrain vehicle such as 4-wheeler or a side-by-side off-road vehicle. Several companies do guided tours that allow you to ride through breathtaking wilderness, ride right up to a glacier or explore the Denali region.

With a guided tour, you never have to worry about getting lost, and you'll get to spots that are local favorites. If you don't want a guide but don't have a 4-wheeler, you can rent them and do it yourself.

A very popular area to ride is the Knik River Valley. From the Jim Creek area, you can head out on a ride that takes you all the way to Knik Glacier. Another popular area for ATVing is the Glacier View area along the Glenn Highway National Scenic Byway (Highway 1), about an hour north of Palmer. Trails shoot in every direction, and there are amazing views of the Talkeetna and Chugach Mountains, Matanuska Glacier and the Matanuska River. Further north, Eureka is another very popular spot for both guided and unguided tours.

Along the Parks Highway (Highway 3), popular riding areas include Willow, Talkeetna, Denali State Park and the Petersville areas. Hatcher Pass and the Bald Mountain trail have excellent opportunities for ATVers as well.

If you are doing it yourself, make sure you respect private property and only ride on trails that are designated for motorized vehicles.
