Skeetawk Ski Area

Skeetawk Ski Area is located in Hatcher Pass and is the Mat-Su Valley's newest winter recreation opportunity. The ski area opened in December 2020 and features a triple chair lift - the first of its kind in the Valley. Hatcher Pass skiing is now a reality in the Mat-Su Valley.

There have been plans for a downhill ski area for years, but a group of dedicated volunteers with the non-profit Hatcher Alpine Xperience is making it become a reality through fund-raising and community support. During the summer of 2019, construction began and installation of the lift began. It was completed in the spring of 2020.

Access & Levels of Difficulty

Skeetawk can be accessed at Mile 10.6 Hatcher Pass Road. It features a 1,200 foot run, with about 300 vertical feet. Near the top of the ski area is a structure park for snowboarders. The run is in beginner to intermediate terrain, and is roughly the size of Hilltop Ski Area in Anchorage.

Future Features

The first phase included building the initial ski lift and trail grooming. In late 2022, lights were installed to allow for night skiing. Additional phases include a quad lift and snow making abilities, but those are years out in the planning process.

Schedule of Operation

Skeetawk generally opens each year in December, with a regular schedule that includes weekends and night skiing. Although Skeetawk's operations are certainly weather dependent, conditions in Hatcher Pass are typically clement. As long as there's enough snow, this south-facing slope will be active. The ski area is a complement to the Government Peak Recreation Area, which features world-class Nordic skiing at the base of Hatcher Pass.
